Randy Orton vs John Cena returned at Hell in a Cell 2014 to reignite their “great” rivalry to decide the next contender for Brock Lesnar’s WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Being that this match is the two’s second cell match together and was only announced within the two weeks leading into the PPV, the anticipation for this match was small. Our commentators are Michael Cole, Jerry “The King” Lawler, and JBL.
Randy Orton vs John Cena for #1 Contendership – WWE Hell in a Cell 2014
The match starts with JBL reminding us that they have 22 World Championships between the two. Orton and Cena begin exchanging strikes until Orton is thrown into the corner, rebounding with a clothesline to Cena. Both men head outside the ring. Cena blocks being thrown into the steps as he knocks Orton into the cage. Orton then grabs Cena, shoving him into the side of the cage. Back in the ring, Orton attempts a pinfall for a two count.
Orton heads back out of the ring and finds a chair, throwing it into the ring. Cena suplexes Orton. The two exchange headbutts with Orton gaining the advantage. Orton grabs another chair, smacking it across Cena’s back. Orton then slams the chair into Cena’s throat and then sets the chair in the corner. Cena picks Orton up for the AA but slithers out of it with a DDT for a two count. Outside the ring, Orton slams Cena on the steps and then rakes his face in the cell.
Back in the ring, Orton hits Cena with a few strikes and then a clothesline for a two count. Orton whips Cena into the opposite corner for another two count. The crowd begins to chant “Let’s go Cena!” dueling with “Cena Sucks”. Cena flies at Orton with a clothesline for a two count. Orton knees Cena in the chest, pushing him into the corner. Orton hits a series of shoulder-blocks for another two count. Outside the ring, Orton whips Cena into the cage then rolls him back in for a two count. The two get up with a test of strength until Cena hits his signature shoulder blocks, followed by an attempted Five Knuckle Shuffle but Orton counters with a powerslam for another two count.
Orton sets up for the hangman’s DDT but Cena back body drops Orton to the floor. Cena picks up Orton and slams him into the cage several times. Cena picks up Orton for the Attitude Adjustment which Orton gets out of. Orton picks up Cena and crotches him on the post. Orton rolls Cena back in the ring. Cena gets up on the Apron and Orton runs and knocks Cena off the apron into the cell. Out of the ring, Cena whips Orton into the cell, and then throws him into another side of it a few times.
Cena looks under the ring and gets a table out. Cena puts the table in the ring and sets it up. Cena sets Orton up for the AA on the table but Orton counters with a dropkick. Orton throws Cena into the chair in the corner for a two count. Orton dismantles the table and places it in the corner and then stomps on Cena some more. Orton picks up the chair and hits Cena in the throat several times. Orton attempts to whip Cena into the table but Cena counters with a shoulderblock. Cena goes for another shoulderblock but Orton counters with a surprise RKO for a close two count.
Orton picks up Cena and throws him into the table for another two count. Orton is frustrated at having not won yet, so he heads back outside and picks up the steps to bring them in the ring. Back in the ring, Orton sets the steps next to Cena’s body as Cena fights his way to his feet. Orton begins setting up for the RKO, and Cena counters it into a slam on the steps. Cena hits a makeshift Five Knuckle Shuffle and sets up for the Attitude Adjustment. Picking Orton up for the AA, Orton counters and hits a low-blow on Cena.
Orton moves the steps around again and sets up for the punt. Orton runs for it and misses. Cena hits a drop toe hold and locks in the STF. This STF was worse than usual. Orton slithers out of the ring, choking Cena with the bottom rope. Cena picks up the stairs and throws them at Orton. Orton dodges the steps. Back in the ring, Cena hits the Attitude Adjusment on Orton for a two count. Cena picks up Orton for another Attitude Adjustment but Orton hits an RKO in a cool looking counter for a close two count. Cena hits another Attitude Adjustment for another two count. One too many if you ask me. Cena goes out of the ring and gets another table. Cena sets up the table and sets Orton on the table. Cena goes to the top rope but Orton stops him. Orton sets Cena up for an RKO through the table. Cena counters and throws him off. Cena picks up Orton for an Attitude Adjustment through the table for the pinfall win at 25:52.
Conclusion: Much better than the last one. Once again though, not a match that required the cell at all. Only a few spots really separated it from any other “No DQ” match or Street Fight.
