WWE in 2010 is an interesting creäture. In the midst of the Nexus storyline that headlined most of the WWE television product during this time, Randy Orton and Sheamus were battling for the WWE Championship. In what would be Sheamus’ first meeting with the cell, he is the heel challenger against babyface champion Randy Orton. Our commentary team is Michael Cole, Matt Stryker, and Jerry “The King” Lawler.
Randy Orton vs Sheamus for the WWE Championship – WWE Hell in a Cell 2010
The bell rings and a referee locks the cell door. The two lock up with neither gaining the advantage. Michael Cole tells us that this is the twentieth cell match in WWE history. That number is probably at least ten too many. Sheamus beats on Orton for a while until Randy clotheslines Sheamus down. Sheamus comes back with blows to Orton’s chest and then an attempted hip toss to Orton is countered and Sheamus flies out of the ring. Orton tries to push Sheamus into the cell but Sheamus slithers away back into the ring.
Orton knocks down Sheamus and stomps his chest and then hits a knee drop to Sheamus’ head for a two-count. Sheamus on the apron hits a big shoulder block to Orton inside the ring. Sheamus heads back out of the ring and hits Orton inside the ring, pulling him outside. Sheamus tries to rake Orton’s face on the cell but Orton counters into an irish whip but Sheamus sends Orton into the cell. That appeared to be the lightest bump in Hell in a Cell history.
Sheamus picks up the steel steps and throws them at Randy but Randy dodges and pulls Sheamus’ arm through the ring post. Orton picks up Sheamus and throws him into the cell several times. Orton picks up the steel steps and nails Sheamus in the face. Orton pushes Sheamus into the ring and gets a near-fall in on him. Orton attempts a vertical suplex but Sheamus puts Orton on the apron and then knocks him outside and into the cell with a shoulder block.
Back in the ring, Sheamus puts the boots to Orton in the corner. Randy attempts a comeback but Sheamus hits him in the torso to knock him down again. Sheamus nails several kicks to Orton’s midsection for another two count. Sheamus tears the top turnbuckle and tries to plant Orton’s face into it. Orton counters but is knocked down again.

Orton tries to hit the hangman’s DDT but is countered. Orton goes outside the ring and hits the DDT on the outside. Getting up, Orton goes for the RKO but he is pushed into the ring post. Back in the ring, Sheamus does a backbreaker on the steps. I don’t understand the psychology of doing that. Sheamus waits for Orton to get up and hits the Brogue Kick but Orton kicks out. I thought the kick was more protected than that.
Sheamus goes outside and grabs a steel chair. Back in the ring, Sheamus hits Orton several times in the back for a two count. This match is everything I hate about WWE matches, where the only real heat is on the near-falls. Sheamus misses a chair shot and Orton nails the RKO. Sheamus rolls out of the ring so Orton can’t get the pinfall. Orton heads outside and gets a sinister look on his face as he sets up the punt. Running for it, Sheamus misses and nails Orton with a Brogue Kick.
Back in the ring, Sheamus gets a close near-fall on Orton. Sheamus taunts the crowd and picks up the steel steps. Sheamus drags Orton over to the steps. As he picks up Orton for the High Cross, Orton countered with a double-leg takedown. Orton then nails the “RKO FROM OUTTA NOWHERE” onto the steel steps for the pinfall win at 22:51 as the crowd politely claps. Randy looked like he took more punishment on his back than Sheamus did.
After the match, Orton celebrates with the WWE Title on top of the cell while the crowd continues to poilitely cheer and clap for him.
Conclusion: A perfectly acceptable match, but nothing at all that was special. Certainly not a great showing for Sheamus’ first cell match, but not necessarily a bad one either. They used the cell a bit more than in the John Cena match, but this feud seemed like one that did not call for the cell in the first place.
