WWF Monday Night Raw Recap – September 11th, 1995

WWF Monday Night Raw for September 11th, 1995 is the first Raw show of the Monday Night War era.

WWF Monday Night Raw

The show opens up with a recap of the WWF Intercontinental Championship Ladder Match from Summerslam. Vince reminds us that we will be having a match between Sid and Shawn Michaels for the Intercontinental Championship. Also, we will be seeing Razor Ramon take on The British Bulldog in the WWF Fall Season Premiere! This video package is all set to a “Right Now” by Van Halen soundalike. For the first show that goes head-to-head with WCW Monday Nitro, they did a better job of telling you what is on this show. With actual matches people might want to see, too. The intro video is also updated with the “I like it Raw” music.

WWF Monday Night Raw

First match is Razor Ramon vs The British Bulldog. Vince reminds us of Dean Douglas grading Razor’s Summerslam match. Crowd chants USA before the two lock up. Razor and Bulldog trade holds early on until Bulldog is tossed over the top rope. Razor has Bulldog in an arm lock and then slaps him around a bit. Bulldog comes back with a few whips and suplexes. Bulldog continues dominating with a gorilla press and a body slam between breaks. Bulldog lifts Razor for the powerslam but Razor counters for a two count. Bulldog hits a body slam, goes to the top and gets stopped and slammed from the top. Razor then slaps him down and hits the signature fallaway slam for another two count. The referee is knocked down. Razor gets Bulldog up for the Razor’s Edge but the refree is down. Dean Douglas comes down and flies off the top to break up the pin. 123 Kid comes down to make the save but is suplexed out by Dean as Dean then flees. Bulldog hits the Powerslam on Razor but 123 Kid breaks up the pin, which causes Razor Ramon the match by DQ. I figured neither man would be decisively beat here, so this was a bit of a predictable finish. Bulldog then continues to beat on The Kid and Razor as Raw goes to break.

123 Kid and Razor Ramon are both in the ring while Vince interviews them both, pointing out how 123 Kid cost Razor the match. King is talking over Vince, which is pretty irritating. 123 Kid claims that Razor cost him a match last week, so this is just him getting even. 123 Kid says he’ll beat Razor again next week if he wants. King is talking over this far too much and making it very hard to listen to. Razor says anything can happen in the WWF and he made history at Summerslam in the ladder match. Razor asks if the crowd wants it, they got it. So I guess 123 Kid vs Razor Ramon is set for next week.

A promo package is shown, saying that Gorilla Monsoon has made the match between Yoko & Bret vs Mabel & Mo for the WWF Tag Team Titles.

WWF Monday Night Raw

Next match is The Smoking Gunns vs The Brooklyn Brawler & Rad Radford. Why do the Smoking Gunns only work squashes? The Smoking Gunns double team the brawler early. Rad tags in but quickly tags out after a little double teaming. The Smoking Gunns exchange tags, and then Billy punches Rad all over the ring. Rad and Brooklyn collide, which allows The Smoking Gunns to hit the Sidewinder for the pinfall win. Nothing to speak of here.

Another Goldust vignette. This time, he’s wearing a gold top hat and talks about The Undertaker’s fans. Besides that, nothing really new with his here.

WWF Monday Night Raw

Raw is brought to you by Levis and Skittles. The next match is Isaac Yankem D.D.S. vs Scott Taylor. Yankem’s ridiculous pants and dental drill music slay me. Lawler says David Letterman called Yankem to fix the gap in his tooth. Lawler also suggests he could fix Gorilla Monsoon’s teeth too. The entire match is Yankem punching and stomping Taylor. Yankem gorilla presses Taylor, landing on the top rope. Yankem then hits the “DDS” (DDT) for the pinfall win. Another silly squash match against competitive matches on Nitro.

Todd Pettengill makes some silly jokes about NBC and Isaac Yankem. Todd promotes In Your House with the Triple Header match with Diesel & Shawn vs Owen & Yokozuna for all of the titles. Todd says Gorilla added a stipulation that the champion’s advantage is gone, so they all could  lose the titles on a DQ. Bam Bam Bigelow vs British Bulldog? That’s been built up. Razor vs Dean Douglas and Bret Hart vs Jean Pierre Lafitte sound very one sided. Oh, before Todd forgets, Savio Vega vs Waylon Mercy is happening on In Your House as well. Glad he made sure not to forget that one.

WWF Monday Night Raw

Before Sycho Sid vs Shawn Michaels starts, we’re shown a set of Shawn Michaels merchandise we can buy for just $25! Shawn does an interview from the bathroom and says it starts and ended with him. Shawn passes by a ladder and shudders. Shawn Michaels vs Sycho Sid for the WWF Intercontinental Championship gets underway.

Shawn and Sid exchange holds. Sid tosses Shawn over the rope but Shawn does the infamous Royal Rumble spot and is back in the ring, knocking Sid to the outside. Ted Dibiase is furious about this. Sid then takes over the match, smashing Shawn into the turnbuckle. Sid whips Shawn into the other corner, and then clotheslines him to the outside. Sid picks up and drops Shawn on the apron. Sid distracts the ref and Ted Dibiase stomps Shawn. Raw goes to break.

WWF Monday Night Raw

Back from break, Shawn fights out of a bearhug. Sid tosses Shawn over but Shawn locks on a leg lock. Back up, Sid nails a chokeslam on Shawn. Lawler taunts us, saying “We got a new champion!” Sid picks up Shawn for a powerbomb but Shawn back body drops Sid out of it. Shawn punches Sid in the stomach as he fights up. Sid whips Shawn but Shawn hits a flying lariat for a two count. Shawn goes to the top and he hits a cross body block for a two count. Shawn then hits the Superkick three times as Sid bounces off the ropes for the pinfall win. Decent TV match, pretty cool finish.

WWF Monday Night Raw

After the match, Shawn poses with the Intercontinental Championship in the ring as the women go wild for him. Raw goes to break and we get a commercial promoting the In Your House PPV. The commercial featured Bob Backlund and The Bushwhackers. Dok Hendrix is backstage with Diesel and Shawn Michaels. Dok asks them how they feel about the In Your House PPV coming up. Shawn says it’s time for the two of them to move on to bigger and better things. Diesel says they’re the two dudes with all the straps.

Next week on Raw: Yoko & Owen vs Mabel & Mo and 123 Kid vs Razor Ramon. The match was taped in advance so they’re showing clips of it here. Interesting tactic.
